Celebrating successes

2023 Triples Winners and Club President

Our annual dinner and prize giving social in November is a wonderful way to congratulate and celebrate our players’ successes following club competitions. With over 50 attendees, this year’s special event was as lively as ever, with lots of loud applause and warm-hearted banter recognising the achievements of all our finalists, runners up as well as winners. The full list of winners is available at https://www.tetburybowlsclub.co.uk/comp-winners.

This year we acknowledged one outstanding player for their contribution and success in the 50+ years he has been at Tetbury Bowls Club.

Roger Bird began playing very early on -- at the age of 8 -- and his successes are well documented on our honours boards. His first adult club competition win was in 1980 in the Triples with M Houghton and G Ind; this year, he won the Triples with Rich Thomas and Rob Hatto (pictured from left is Rob, President Alan Harris, Rich, and Roger). Over the years, Roger’s name appears multiple times on the Men’s Singles, Men’s 2-bowls, Men’s Pairs, Open Pairs, Handicap Singles, and Triples boards. His ability was recognised at county level too with almost 100 matches played for Gloucestershire’s men. With this pedigree of playing achievement and his continued support of the club, Tetbury Bowls was delighted to award Roger with an Honorary Life Membership. The club has recognised, over its 100-year history, a small number of members for their contributions to the club and the sport of lawn bowls. Roger joins current honorary members Angela Wildsmith, Lance Vick, and John Hughes.

We’ve introduced a new winter social event following the thoughtful donation of a new pool table courtesy of the Bird family. Every Wednesday evening, members are invited to rack ‘em up! Everyone is welcome regardless of experience – although I understand there might be a few sharks amongst us. So, Wednesdays are pool night and Friday’s event alternates between bingo and quizzes. If you’re interested in becoming a social member to join in the fun, give us a call on 07414 274375 or email tetburybowls@gmail.com.

Throughout December, Tetbury Bowls Club is again participating in the Christmas Tree Festival at St. Saviour’s. We hope you take a few minutes to stop by and admire not just our tree, but the many wonderful displays decorated by Tetbury’s clubs and local organisations.

And from 5th to 21st January, the World Indoor Championships will be keeping our players glued to their screens, watching players from around the world compete against top British players.

The members of Tetbury Bowls Club wish all readers a very wonderful Christmas and New Year. If you’d like to know more about the club, visit our website at www.tetburybowlsclub.co.uk or email us at tetburybowls@gmail.com.
