In mid-November, our annual awards evening recognised the runners up and winners of our club competitions. Held at Minchinhampton Golf Club (new), the meal and presentations gave us a chance to dig out our finery – which was great since there’s not been much chance to get spruced up lately! In addition to the usual trophies, there were 3 new awards: the 51 Up cup sponsored by the late Chris Brown and won by Gareth Brown and Rob Hart was presented by Chris's daughters, the Marilyn Rice Cup for the most improved player was presented to Dawn Crewe, and the Junior Shield winner and runner up were brothers Jacob and Harley Horrell.
A very emotional, special award was presented to Lance Vick for over 25 years’ service to Tetbury Bowls Club, both as Club Captain and Fixtures Secretary. Along with a beautiful, engraved glass plaque, Lance was made an Honorary Life Member and we’re likely to see him down at the club supporting his wife Pat and others in the coming season.
Much has been achieved on our remodel. Our ‘Men in Hats’ have worked incredibly hard. The walls are up, joining the clubroom to the changing rooms and creating space for an accessible toilet, the roof is mostly tiled, and the steel is in for the bi-fold windows. The base floor is laid and insulation in; plastering, heating, electrical and plumbing are next. It’s all very exciting!
To develop skills in the offseason, our coaches held ‘Talking Heads’ sessions in January teaching players how to read the current state of play and to judge what their next shot should be. Given the high interest level, more sessions are likely to be held soon.
We welcome members throughout the year, so if you’re interested in playing or just spectating and socialising, please visit tetburybowlsclub.co.uk.
